Why Sciatica Causes Numbness or Tingling
Sciatica does not always cause only pain. Many patients also experience tingling, numbness, burning sensations, or altered feeling in the leg or foot.
These symptoms occur because irritated nerves affect both sensation and movement. When a nerve becomes inflamed or compressed, normal signals traveling along the nerve pathway may become disrupted.
The location of symptoms often depends on which nerve root is involved. Some patients notice tingling into the calf or foot, while others experience numbness along the outside of the leg.
Symptoms may shift throughout the day depending on sitting, walking, bending, or activity level.
Numbness or tingling does not automatically indicate severe damage, but persistent neurological symptoms should not be ignored.
Symptoms that deserve evaluation include increasing numbness, weakness in the leg or foot, difficulty lifting the foot normally, persistent tingling that does not improve, or symptoms associated with significant back pain.
In many cases, these symptoms improve as nerve irritation decreases and normal movement returns.
